Indian Parliament passed
a law in 1995 assuring barrier free environment, educational
integration, equal employment opportunities and other
rights to Physically Challenged persons. Unfortunately
none of the provisions of this law were seriously considered
by the Central and State Governments till today. Mukti
takes up this cause very seriously by arranging face
to face programmes, participated by the Physically Challenged
persons and the agencies empowered to implement the
People with Disabilities Act. Feed back and grievances
from the community were sent to the concerned department
and impress upon them to take immediate remedial measures.
In 1998, when a group of
spastic children confined to wheel-chairs wanted to
visit the Government Museum, they were dismayed to find
that ramp facilities were not available there. Mukti
and its associate organization, Access Council for the
Rights of the Disabled, took upon themselves the task
of persuading the museum authorities to arrange a make
shift ramp for these spastic children. This was Mukti’s
first victory in providing barrier free environment
to persons confined to wheel chairs.
In order to motivate
the physically challenged persons achieve their fullest
potential, every year Mukti recognizes the achievement
of the Outstanding physically challenged persons with
Lalchand Milapchand Dadha Award. |
